Two Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s deputies have been arrested in connection with the beating of two Marrero teenagers Saturday while several other deputies watched, according to sources close to the investigation.
The deputies, Cornell Farlin and Shawn Henry, were arrested today. Farlin was booked with two counts of aggravated battery and one count of simple battery. Henry was booked with one count of simple battery
Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand is discussing the incident at a news conference.
James Shoulders, 17, and Khystian Thompson, 17, have said that a deputy beat them after several officers found the teens and two other friends shooting paintball guns at each other near a vacant apartment complex late Saturday night. The teens say they were handcuffed and beaten before being released with a summons. They received bruising and swelling during the incident, which included punches, kicks and strikes with a police baton, the teenagers said.
From Press Conference…
To those of you who think the officers may be innocent, Officer Shawn Henry confessed to hitting them, and officer Cornell Farlin refused to cooperate with the investigation. Here’s an excerpt from the JPSO press release:
"During the interviews of those officers involved, one officer, Cornell Farlin, turned in his department issued handgun and badge attempting to resign from the JPSO. Farlin refused to cooperate in the investigation.
Chief Gorman and Captain Buras determined during their investigation that although there were a total of five officers initially involved in this matter, it was officers Cornell Farlin and Shawn Henry who did, in fact, strike both victims while they were handcuffed. It was also determined that Farlin struck both men with his department issued ASP (defensive weapon) during the incident.
After being re-interviewed Officer Shawn Henry admitted being untruthful and confessed to striking one of the men with his hands.
This investigation continues, and any further disciplinary action is yet to be determined."
